What is “Appen”?
Appen provide and manufacturer machine learning applications and software with the goal of making machine learning act more “human”.
They have reviews, awards and accolades from some of the biggest names in the world including Technology 500 and FlexJobs making working with Appen look very appealing.
So what is the job?
Appen offer various different jobs that you can do working from home including:
1) Raters – rate and assess different services provided by different companies.
2) Translation – provide translation, linguistic and transcription services.
3) Micro Tasks – complete simple tasks from home. Each task takes up to an hour.
All jobs are designed to help different clients they work with. Appen work with some big-name clients such as Google, Instagram and Facebook.
Job complexity…
From what we can tell you will never have the opportunity to decide what job you want to do or what clients you want to work with. You will have to apply to work at Appen and once your application is accepted you will be told what you have to do.
Our application to work at Appen still has not been accepted. We applied over a month ago. We have also read a lot of people saying it’s almost impossible to get a job with Appen.
There is also a relatively complex exam to pass.
Does it cost anything? What is the pay?
Working with Appen does not cost anything. We have found no evidence of any cost required from anyone who has or currently works with Appen.
The pay at Appen is a bit of a mystery according to current and former employees. It used to be quite good, with certain projects paying around $15 an hour. Suddenly they changed tactics and reduced all pay rates by 50%. Understandably, people working with Appen were not happy.
From what we can tell average pay ranges from $3/hour to $15/hour depending on numerous factors. However candidates are only told what the pay rate is once they are invited to a qualification exam for a particular project. This exam must be passed before you can work on the project. Therefore we have no fixed information about what you will be paid working with Appen.
Finally, all pay is distributed by a payment service called Payoneer. In our opinion, this is another hurdle in getting paid from Appen.
Sounds complicated, but is Appen a SCAM?
Working online isn’t meant to be easy – otherwise everyone would be doing it. It does NOT make Appen a SCAM. So yes, sometimes you have to provide some real value to a company such as Appen in order to get paid. However, we still feel there are easier ways to make money online than the complicated process that Appen requires you to go through.
We have read feedback from hundreds of people who have worked, and most importantly got paid, from Appen. Generally the feedback is the same. Good company, fair pay but a tightly controlled and complicated process.
Also, we have read a lot of feedback from people who have randomly been suspended or not paid for their work. That sort of feedback worries us. Imagine if you had been working for a service like Appen for 6 months and was relying on it to feed your family – then suddenly your account is suspended and your pay withheld. How would you cope? It also seems any decision made by Appen is final meaning the pay is lost and the job is gone.
Our Rating
The company is clearly an established and professional company. The clients they have ensure the job is legitimate. However questions about the treatment of staff makes us worry.
Totally free so we have to give a top rating here.
So many people saying it can take months to get an application accepted. Our application hasn’t been accepted after a month. Don’t expect to be working for Appen any time soon.
No response to our email questioning the status of our application. Lots of feedback online about lack of support means we have to give another low rating.
Overall, we would SUGGEST trying working with Appen – but we CANNOT RECOMMEND it.
This recommendation is based on us reading hundreds of reviews and testimonials from people who have either applied, worked or are currently working with Appen.

Pros
Been with Appen for a few months. Good solid training and communications. Pay not so bad for a few hours work each day. There is a very thorough process to being employed with them which requires a lot of study, time and effort. This will put most off. However, the reward of a good paid job and flexibility of work makes it very worthwhile. I’m happy working with Appen.
Cons
Unlike a ‘typical’ job, you really are working the hours. No chat to colleagues, no down time etc. 4-6 hours work a day is 4-6 hours of solid work. That can be quite demanding mentally. As said above, the renumeration and flexibility make it very worthwhile.

PLEASE – PLEASE – PLEASE – JUST DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!
I have never experienced something like this. They have ignored all 8 emails I’ve sent. Still have not been paid for work done over two months ago. This is not the company for hard workers who expect to be paid for their time. Very disheartening and unprofessional. This company is an illusion, don’t be fooled. I cant believe they have got away with as much as they have. My next email is to the CEO. (doubt he will even respond) – will update if he does.
SHUT APPEN DOWN AND ADVICE TO GENUINE WORKERS – DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME!

It looks like that they are collecting only data from people who are seeking some jobs. They are even to stupid to show that they have some available work. After signing up they have shown me 5 available jobs and from this 5 have been 2 CLOSED! Do they really think someone is verifying his data for nothing?

It’s a crap, I was trying to get over their tests but no way.. reading 12 pages and still trying to remember everything and trying to figure out why they’re acting this way by making the workers to waste time. Instead of giving a chance to have at least a shot.. even to the common persons. I’m fed up.

They are crooks. They don’t reimburse you and when you complain they ignore you.

SCAMMERS, SERIOUSLY RUN AS SOON AS YOU CAN
I have wasted two weeks of my life for a “legit very really employment process” only for them to surprise me in the end with a 200 dollar software expense for my assigned equipment AND a 500 dollar shipping cost of said equipment. When asking for my 200 back, they told me to provide the routing number, the account number, and the username and password for my bank account. They keep claiming they are not scammers but this last part clearly indicates that they are infact, scammers. DO NOT TRUST THEM, I HAVE PLENTY OF EVIDENCE TO PROVE MY STATEMENT.
First, they claim to conduct and interview with you over Skype, in which they will just send you a series of interview questions and tell you you’re fitting for the role. Then they surprise you with a fishing scam by telling you that you need to provide 200 dollars for software costs, important for your training. They were unable to provide me when a straight answer as to why this payment was needed and why the company doesn’t just cover it. They’re excuse was it prevents the costs of lost equipment cause if someone’s employment is terminated during training, the equipment does not get returned. But oddly enough, they claim they’ll provide you with your 200 reimbursement once your package of equipment arrives. The equipment supposedly arrives with a 3,000 check for basically cooperating with them AFTER you pay the 500 for the equipment to be shipped out.

Would be decent If YOU WERE PAID!
I have to admit, the platform has improved greatly since I was with them back in 2016 and there are a lot more projects to pick from. I mean a lot. However, Appen is going to receive 1 star from me until I actually get paid for my work! I followed the guidelines. I have everything in place. I have my Payoneer account set up. The deadline to submit your invoices for me is today. Mine is blank. They have terrible communication apparently. I’ve written to them maybe eight or nine times. I finally got assured that I will be paid. I have not been paid. If I get paid, I will update this review. But don’t expect four or five stars. One should not go through this. This is my only income right now and I have no income… They invited me to multiple projects. I got approved for maybe 10 projects but I refuse to continue working on anything because I don’t want to waste my time with the potential of not getting paid! It’s a shame that people have to come to sites like this and post negative reviews. But when are things going to change with companies like this?

Appen is broke
This site was good while it lasted but now I think they’re broke and not paying people what they worked for on purpose. They act like they have an issue with fixing missing hours and randomly dropped me from a project and disqualified me from taking a test for another project for NO REASON.
Appen is going BROKE and it’s what they DESERVE for treating workers like this. Very soon the media will be writing articles about them being bankrupt.

Company going bankrupt
Didn’t even get to the point of being able to do any work for them. Applied for 20+ projects, all just sitting at the next stage and not been accepted yet still getting emails to ask me to apply for them…
Seems as though Appen is going under, would explain why people aren’t being paid and why people aren’t being accepted for projects.

It’s a massive grift. As soon as an invoice is generated your account is mysteriously deleted and you don’t get paid. When I queried this deletion I was told it was a business decision subject to intellectual property and therefore could not be discussed. I agree with others on here – it’s a data mining scam – stay away.

IMPORTANT! For All Appen’s MEMBER
Important! I would have given a 5 star rating but unfortunately:
1 – Appen looks like a good company based on the offers it provides such as UHRS…,
2 – fast customer service responds,
3 – the payment are done despite the slowness.
The questions which all Appen’s worker have to ask is the connection with payonner, if after months of tasks payoneer blocks you for no reason ( the “no reason” mean as is ), will Appen participate with this scheme? Why doesn’t Appen have a solution to recover funds if its payment method is blocked? why is payoneer the only payment way?
Problem mean exception: like robots, if Appen policy lacks a solution for payout recovery in case of a payment problem then the appen service will not find a solution and the problem will remain a problem that giving stars will not able to solve!

One star is generous. I went through all of the work to set up an appen account and an account for their preferred way to supposedly pay. I completed a job close to three months ago. No payment was ever made. I wrote a rep four times. Finally, heard that QA only approved a small portion of work and would not be paying me. That is ridiculous. I read the instructions very carefully and I put a lot of time and thought into the project. Frankly, I feel this is not a legitimate company. The communication is terrible and there is no payout for a fully completed job ( done correctly). All that nonsense for only 12 dollars. Please do not waste your time or energy on Appen. It is not worth the effort and frustration.

Terrible Customer Care
I have done work and earned with Appen but my Payoneer account got blocked, so I can’t withdraw my money from Appen. I requested that I perhaps provide a different Payoneer account, paypal or bank account to withdraw my earnings but I was told it wasn’t possible. So they are keeping my money, months of work.
I mean, what kind of a company does not have a backup plan in case there is an issue with their payment system? You can’t seriously tell me that it’s not possible to release my earning any other way, but just keep it, I have spent a lot of time and energy completing tasks on your platform and have recommended several friends to signup. I’m now going to warn them.

Worst experience in online working
Worst online experience! First of all, no opportunity to close account in one clic, you need to apply for account deletion and that will take up to 30 days! Never apply to the company! They will send you endless num of emails, and if you want to unsubscribe, you need to send special apply for it too ( again, it takes up to 30 days for their review). Lastly, they gather your personal data and their conditions looks like scamming. Avoid the company!

I wish I could give them 0 stars but unfortunately there is no such an option.
Total scam that must be shut down today. If you are looking for a job find it elsewhere.
On top of that, they write positive reviews on their scam company. By the way, warm greetings to the fascist censor and faker Jay from gighustlers, nothing to say on the theme, so spreading idiotic lies about ”peace of mind” that only appen can give. Is it a cult now? All adults can handle their state of mind without your foolish advice, and if appen scam can in any way affect peace of mind, you will have more peace in your mind by staying away from appen scam.readd and weep, you faker fascist censor, and try to censor me here.
